Tigers Fall to Owls in Four Sets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (10-14, 1-8 American) dropped a four-set match to Florida Atlantic (15-7, 6-3 American) inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams battled point-for-point in the opening frame, with Janyah Henderson, Zaniah Hoskins and Brianna Washington putting up kills for the Tigers, while Olivia Hart, Kayla Richardson and Anna Hartman led the way for the Owls. FAU went on a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage before Washington sparked a 4-0 Memphis run in response. The teams traded points late, but Jasmyn Tate sealed the set with two kills to give Memphis the 25-22 win.
The Owls gained early momentum in the second set with a 6-4 run. An attack error from Hart ignited a 4-0 Tiger run to take a 10-9 lead. Génesis Rodriguez and Henderson helped Memphis keep pace with Maggie Allred and Kierstin Bevelle of FAU. The Owls regained momentum with a 5-0 run to go up 17-13. Despite kills from Hoskins, Henderson, Washington and Tate, Hart's four late kills closed out the set for FAU, 25-17.
The third set followed a similar script as FAU opened with a 6-2 run behind Hart and Allred. Henderson and Hoskins countered with a 5-0 run and later a 3-0 surge to make it a one-point game at 17-16. Both teams traded points before Hart tallied three more kills to secure the 25-22 win for FAU.
Memphis came out strong in the final set with a 7-0 run, highlighted by three kills from Hoskins. FAU capitalized on Tiger attack errors to narrow the deficit to 7-4. After trading points, the Owls went on a 5-0 run, with Bevelle recording three kills to take a 10-9 lead. Tate answered with two kills to put Memphis back in front, 13-11, but FAU responded with another 4-0 run to swing momentum its way. Bevelle added two more kills to close out the match, 25-19.
NOTABLES
- Zaniah Hoskins led the offense with 15 kills and 15.5 points.
- The freshman also added 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
- Jasmyn Tate followed with a season-high 11 kills and 12 points.
- Brianna Washington tied her career high with nine kills and set a new career best with 10 points.
- The freshman also recorded two blocks, a conference play high.
- Sydney Marshall set a career high with 38 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double of the year.
- It marked her first 30-plus assist match.
- She's the first Tiger to record 30-plus assists since Maddy Bach's 38 against UT Martin on Sept. 13.
- Marshall added a career-high three block assists.
- Three Tigers, Zaniah Hoskins, Abigail Schlueter and Sydney Marshall, each recorded double-digit digs with 13, 10 and 10, respectively.
- Janyah Henderson tallied five block assists in the loss.
- It marks her ninth match this season with five or more blocks.

Memphis will head north to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to face Temple at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 26 on ESPN+ before returning to Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Wednesday to face UAB at 7 p.m.
