Tigers Drop Final Midweek of Season in Jonesboro
May 07, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers moved to 21-28 overall (8-13 AAC) with the loss as the Red Wolves improved to 21-26-1 overall.
"It was a poor overall night for us," head coach Matt Riser said. "Overall, I did think Malik Harris pitched pretty well for us, I thought Chorzelewski pitched pretty well even though he took the loss on unearned runs and I thought Jake Curtis played well. Some individuals played well but collectively as a whole, we played poorly."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis got on the board early when Jacob Compton doubled to left-center field with two outs in the top of the first inning to drive in Austin Baskin.
• Alex Fernandes shot a two-out double down the left-field line to score Curtis in the second inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
• Austen Jaslove gave Arkansas State a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second with a three-run shot to left field. A sac-fly later in the inning plated a fourth run to make the score 4-2, ASU.
• The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Baskin was caught stealing and Jonah Sutton came in to score on the play.
• In the sixth, Memphis tied the game at 4-4 on a sac-fly by Compton to give him his second RBI of the night and team-leading 50th of the season.
• A miscue by the Tigers defensively with two outs in the bottom of the seventh allowed three unearned runs to score for the Red Wolves and give ASU a three-run lead. The score of 7-4 held final as Arkansas State evened the season series with a win.
NOTABLES
• Curtis got on base three times and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a walk and a run scored.
• Compton ended the night 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and a pair of RBI to give him 50 on the season.
• Reigning AAC Player of the Week Daunte Stuart hit his second triple of the season and Fernandes went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
• Harris pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. The freshman from Draper, Utah, struck out three and walked one.
• Brandon Chorzelewski was tagged with the loss after allowing three unearned runs in the seventh to go to 0-2 on the season.
• Jonah Posey threw a scoreless eighth inning of relief.
