KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After earning an at-large bid to the national tournament last weekend, the Memphis men's tennis team is set to begin its NCAA Tournament journey Friday when it takes on No. 27 North Carolina at Barksdale Stadium on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
The first-round matchup with the Tar Heels is set for 9 a.m. CT. Host and No. 7 seed Tennessee will play East Tennessee State on Friday at noon. The winners will meet on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the second round.
No. 31 Memphis begins its NCAA quest as an at-large bid with an 18-6 overall record and a runner-up finish at the 2024 American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championships.
The Tigers are 2-2 this season against top-25 teams, earning a 4-2 victory against No. 11 Harvard in January and a 4-2 win on the road against No. 24 Oklahoma State in March.
Junior Pablo Alemany led the Tigers this season behind 43-combined wins across singles and doubles and was named the AAC Player of the Year on Wednesday by the league's head coaches.
The Valencia, Spain native enters the NCAA Tournament No. 58 in the ITA singles ranking and has earned an at-large bid into the Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships later this month.
Alemany teamed up with senior Charlie Barry to go 19-10 this season in doubles, including a 5-2 mark against ranked opponents. The duo landed on The American's All-Conference Doubles Team and is currently the second-highest ranked tandem in the AAC at No. 29.
Alemany and Barry were also tabbed as the third alternate into the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championships.
Four Tigers led the team in singles action this spring with 12 wins – Pablo Alemany, Pau Fanlo, Moritz Kudernatsch and Maxime Dubouch – while Fanlo paced the team with a 23-11 overall mark over the fall and spring seasons.
The Tigers are making their 10th NCAA trip in the last 12 tournaments played. They have advanced past the first round in three of those, most recently in 2021 after defeating Georgia Tech 4-2 before falling to No. 3 Tennessee.
No. 27 UNC earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship after a 14-9 regular season. The Tar Heels tied for fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship.
UNC is making its 10th-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship and is seeking its 10th-straight trip to the Round of 16.
