Tigers Fall to Blazers in Extras, 5-4
May 11, 2024 | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Memphis baseball team fought back to tie the game in the ninth and take a 10th-inning lead before UAB walked off with a two-run home run to defeat the Tigers, 5-4, at Young Memorial Field.
The Tigers fell to 21-30 overall (8-15 AAC) with the loss as the Blazers improved to 24-25 (11-12 AAC) overall.
"Really tough break there," head coach Matt Riser said. "I thought the guys did a really good job of responding from yesterday. We scored early, Seth Garner and Luke Ellis both pitched well and the offense found a way to scratch one late and we manufactured another run in the 10th to take a lead. At the end of the day, Brayden Sanders is our guy and he's going to be put right back out there tomorrow in the same situation."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers got on the board first when Brennan DuBose scored on a fielder's choice by Jacob Compton to give him his team-leading 51st RBI of the season.
• The Blazers tied it up in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out single by Gavin Lewis Jr.
• UAB took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Nick Hollifield.
• In the sixth, Pierre Seals doubled to the right-center field gap and drove in Daunte Stuart all the way from first to tie the game at two runs apiece.
• A two-out wild pitch by Tiger pitcher Luke Ellis allowed the Blazers to get a run back in the bottom of the sixth to retake a 3-2 lead.
• Trailing 3-2, Jake Curtis legged out an infield single and stole second base to lead off the inning for the Tigers. Down to their final out, Brennan DuBose lined a single to right-center field to score Curtis and tied the game at 3-3.
• Ellis held the Blazers in check in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
• In the 10th, Seth Cox came off the bench to pinch hit and delivered an RBI sac-fly to right field that drove in pinch runner Tyler Heckert and give Memphis a 4-3 lead.
• With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Lewis Jr. delivered a walk-off, two-run home run to win the game and the series for the Blazers.
