No. 27 Memphis Wins 4-3 Thriller Over Tulsa
Apr 06, 2024 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – No. 27 Memphis opened its weekend on the road with a 4-3 comeback win over Tulsa Friday night in a marathon match at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The win improved the Tigers to 15-4 overall on the season and 6-1 record on the road. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 9-12.
"I'm really proud of our fight tonight," head coach Chris Doerr said. "We dug deep and showed a lot of heart. Team Captain Pau [Fanlo] gave us a great start, while Conor's [Gannon] response after the first set was pure heart.
"I also want to give a great shout to our guys on the bench. Sam [Reeve], Mika [Berghaus] and Harry [Rock] did an incredible job turning an away match into a home match for us with their energy."
Pau Fanlo and Juan Zabala got the night started for the Tigers in doubles with a 6-3 win from the third position. Tulsa, however, claimed the second line 6-3 to even it up before No. 38 Pierce Rollins and Timothy Carlsson Seger clinched 7-6 (7-4) from atop the lineup to take the first point of the match.
Memphis responded in singles with three victories in the first four matches. Fanlo got it going with a 6-1, 6-3 sweep on court three before Tulsa's Rollins took down No. 55 Pablo Alemany 6-1, 7-6(1) at the top spot.
The Tigers then went back in front 3-2 after claiming courts four and six in straight sets. Maxime Dubouch won 6-4, 6-3 before Moritz Kudernatsch earned a 7-5, 6-2 decision.
Tulsa did not back down as freshman Alex Okonkwo dropped the first set to Zabala on court five before fighting from behind to win 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) and pull the Golden Hurricane even, 3-3, with the Tigers.
From there, all eyes were on court two where Conor Gannon was in a battle with Thiago Pernas. After losing 3-6 in the first frame, Gannon fought to take the match the distance where he won 6-3, 6-2 in the final two sets to clinch the 4-3 win for Memphis.
