Apr 21, 2024 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – The top-seeded Memphis Tiger men's tennis team was edged 4-3 by sixth-seeded Charlotte in the final of the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
No. 32 Memphis held a 3-0 lead in the match, but 64th-ranked 49ers came back to tie it 3-3, leaving the title to be decided on the second singles court. Championship Most Outstanding Player Vasco Prata won the clinching point to give Charlotte its first-ever AAC crown.
"Tough day in the end for us," Memphis head coach Chris Doerr said. "We started off well, but Charlotte stuck in there and kept fighting. Hats off to Charlotte head coach Kyle Bailey, his team did an awesome job.
"We were on the other side of winning yesterday and today we weren't so lucky. That's tennis and especially college tennis. I am very proud of this team and proud of what we have achieved and their daily hard work. I know this team will respond at the NCAA's."
The 34th-ranked pairing of Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry started the match with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Conor Gannon and Harry Rock clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court two to give Memphis a 1-0 lead.
Senior Pau Fanlo made it 2-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win in singles on court four. Alemany followed suit from the top court with a 6-1, 6-4 sweep to bring the Tigers within the brink of a championship.
The 49ers woke up, winning the next three matches in straight sets on courts five, three and two before Prata battled to send his match with Gannon to a third set on court two.
Gannon won 6-2 in the first frame and held a 5-4 lead in the second, but Prata came from behind to win 7-5 in set two and 6-3 in the third to clinch the crown.
Memphis will now await its matchup in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 29.
