Tigers Advance to AAC Championship Match, Tops Charlotte 4-1
Apr 20, 2024 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS – The 3rd-seeded Memphis women's tennis team will play for an American Athletic Conference Championship title for the second time in three years, after the Tigers topped 2nd-seeded and No. 43 Charlotte, 4-1, in the semifinals of the 2024 AAC Championship Saturday afternoon at Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas, Texas.
No. 47 Memphis (17-7) will face top-seeded and host SMU for the title Sunday at noon on ESPN+.
"Another huge team effort, everyone is fighting and we keep getting great efforts from the entire team," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "Monique was a beast today in doubles. With the point on the line and Camila serving up 6-5, Mo was all over the net. I was so impressed with how brave she was.
"I wish I could single someone else out, but they all played so hard and I can't wait to watch them fight again tomorrow for the championship."
The Tigers got the semifinal started the same way they did Friday night, winning the doubles point to take an early lead.
After the 49ers took a 6-1 win at court three to grab the momentum, the Tigers got a 6-4 victory from Emily Meyer and Leonie Moeller on court two to even things up.
Memphis' top tandem of Camila Soares and Monique Woog then clinched the point with a 7-5 win at the top spot to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead into singles.
The momentum continued for the Bluff City girls, winning the first set on five of the six courts. Charlotte took its only point of the day on court one to tie the score at 1-1.
Meyer, Micah Pierce and Alice Amendola each earned sweeps from the bottom half of the lineup to secure the victory.
Meyer won 6-3, 7-6(5) over Sara Suchankova on court four, while Pierce rolled to a 6-2, 7-5 decision on court six to bring the match to the brink.
Amendola locked up the clinch point from court five with her 8th-straight singles win behind a 6-3, 7-5 victory that sent Memphis to the title match for the second time in program history.
