Tigers Fall Short in AAC Championship Match
Apr 21, 2024 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS – The 3rd-seeded Memphis women's tennis team fell short against top-seeded SMU in the American Athletic Conference Championship title match, losing 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas, Texas.
The 47th-ranked Tigers dropped to 17-8 overall, ending their season after reaching the AAC title match for the second time in three years.
"It wasn't meant to be today, but Ryan [Haymond] and I are incredibly proud of this group," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "I think we lost the first eight games in doubles, down 0-3, 0-3, and 0-2, but we battled back to win one of those and had match points in another. I loved the fight.
"We didn't have our best day in singles, but we tried to claw our way back into the matches after some slow starts. SMU proved to be too tough today, but I am very grateful for this group and all they have given to the program."
Memphis gained momentum early in the doubles but were unable to capitalize. Following a win from the Mustangs on court two, Memphis' top tandem of Camila Soares and Monique Woog claimed a 6-4 victory to even the match.
Alice Amendola and Miriam Grosmann battled on court three in an incredible tiebreaker that saw both teams stave off multiple match points before SMU took a 7-6 (11) decision to grab the first point of the day.
The win sparked the Mustangs, who went on to win the first set on all six courts before finishing off the Tigers. SMU won 6-1, 6-4 on court four, 6-1, 6-3 on court five and 6-3, 6-3 on court three to clinch the match and the championship.
The loss ends the careers of Soares and Woog.
"Monique and Camila have given nine combined years of their lives to Memphis Tennis, and I appreciate them. Also wanted to give a big, big thank you to family and friends that traveled to Dallas to support us. We had great fan support not only here but all year at home. Thank you, thank you!"
