Tigers Fall to Rebels, 5-3, in First of Two Season Matchups

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped the first of two matchups this season to Ole Miss on Wednesday night, 5-3, at Swayze Field in Oxford, Mississippi.
The Tigers dropped to .500 (7-7) on the season overall with the loss while the Rebels improved to 9-5 and have now won three-straight games.
"I thought we did a good job getting to their starter early, we just had a tough time creating offense the rest of the night," head coach Matt Riser said. "The encouraging part from tonight was that out of the bullpen, we pitched pretty well."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Will Marcy singled and Austin Baskin walked before Daunte Stuart and Pierre Seals both laced RBI singles to center field.
• The Rebels got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Reagan Burford to cut the Tiger lead in half.
• Ole Miss tied it with their second solo shot of the game in the bottom of the third (Ethan Groff) before a two-run shot by Ethan Lege gave the Rebels a 4-2 lead later in the frame.
• The Rebels extended their lead to three runs in the bottom of the sixth when Jackson Ross doubled in Campbell Smithwick.
• The Tigers got a run back in the top of the eighth inning when Jake Curtis came in to score on a wild pitch with two outs.
• Brayden Sanders pitched the bottom of the eighth and kept the Rebels at bay, striking out a pair to get out of a bases-loaded jam and give Memphis a chance in the ninth.
• Seals led off the ninth with a single up the middle before stealing second base. The Tigers were unable to capitalize on the leadoff baserunner and Ole Miss took the game, 5-3.
NOTABLES
• Marcy tallied a pair of hits to raise his season batting average to .349 and extend his multi-hit game streak to four. He also scored a run and stole his team-leading fifth bag of the year.
• Seals went 2-for-4 with an RBI and stole a base to raise his average to a team-best .353.
• Stuart went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
• Jacob Compton and Alex Fernandes each recorded a hit.
• Cade Davis started on the mound for Memphis and took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one.
• The Tigers used a combination of six pitchers in relief (JT Durham, Seth Garner, Logan Rushing, Seth Cox, Kylan Stepter and Sanders) to throw the final 6.2 innings. That group combined to allow just one run on four hits.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Friday at 5 p.m. against Butler for their first game of the Inaugural Grind City Classic.
