Tigers Fall to Lipscomb, 7-4
Mar 26, 2024 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped its midweek game to Lipscomb, 7-4, on Tuesday afternoon at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in Memphis.
The Tigers dropped to 12-15 overall (1-2 American Athletic Conference) with the loss as the Bisons snapped a five-game losing skid.
"I'm not real happy with where we are right now," head coach Matt Riser said. "This has been a very up and down club. There's a lot more competitive nature in there and we aren't showing it. We're finding ways to lose games instead of win games, and we have to flip that."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Lipscomb's Alex Vergara homered to lead off the game for the Bisons and put them in front 1-0 from the jump.
• A two-out, two-run single by Lipscomb's Parks Bouck made the score 3-0 in the top of the third.
• The Bisons added on in the seventh inning when Vergara hit his second solo shot of the contest. Catcher Austin Kelly made it a three-run frame with a two-run home run to right field to make the score 6-0.
• Austin Baskin put the Tigers on the board with an RBI double to left-center field in the bottom of the seventh that drove in Will Marcy. Daunte Stuart, who made his first start of the season at shortstop, drove in Seth Cox in the very next at-bat with a sac-fly to trim the Lipscomb lead to 6-2.
• The Bisons tacked on a run to extend the lead back to five in the top of the eighth inning when Vergara reached on an error that allowed an unearned, two-out run.
• Memphis scratched back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, the first coming when Marcy grounded into a double play with the bases full of Tigers. Catcher Jonah Sutton came in to score the next at-bat on a wild pitch. The Tigers went down quietly in the ninth, and the Bisons took it by a 7-4 final.
NOTABLES
• Sutton had a two-hit day, scored a run and walked once.
• Baskin ended the game 1-for-2 with an RBI double, a walk and was hit by a pair of pitches to extend his on-base streak to an even 40 games dating back to last season.
• Stuart finished the day 1-for-4 with an RBI and extended his on-base streak to a lengthy 45 games dating back to this time last year in the Southland Conference playing for Northwestern State.
• Seth Cox was 1-for-3 with a first-inning double and a run scored.
• Marcy tallied a hit from the leadoff spot and scored a run.
• Memphis used five pitchers in the loss. Logan Rushing made his first start of the season (eighth appearance) and took the loss to go to 0-1 on the year. He went two innings and allowed just one run on two hits (solo home run) while striking out four and walking one.
• Jonah Posey threw a pair of hitless frames in the fifth and sixth innings. Brandon Chrozelewski threw the final 1.1 innings and did not allow a baserunner.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers open home conference play this weekend when they welcome AAC-newcomer Florida Atlantic (14-8) to FedExPark.
