Feb 03, 2024 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Memphis track and field team will be back on the track on Sunday, competing at the USA Jaguar Invitational at The CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Competition begins at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 5,000 meters. Live results are available to follow at this link.
"We're excited to compete at our championship venue," head coach Kevin Robinson said. "I'm definitely expecting some improved performances and competitiveness. We have some athletes that look ready to do something big, I'm just hoping we compete with maturity and step up in the moment."
Last time out at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational on Jan. 26 and 27, the Tigers had several strong performances. A pair of Tiger hurdlers have been a strong point so far this indoor season, as Gizel Clayton (8.34) and women's 60-meter school-record holder Madison Fleming (8.36) currently hold the second and third-fastest times in the event in The American so far this year. Clayton's 8.34 time in the prelims at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational was second-fastest in school history behind only Fleming's mark of 8.28 last season.
Other strong performances in Louisville included Jadaja Baxter winning the women's long jump (5.96m / 19'6.75) with the seventh-longest jump in the conference this season. In the men's 200 meters, Prior Ochonogor put down a time of 21.75 to finish third in personal-best time. His time ranks No. 10 in the conference so far in 2024.
NOTABLES
• Indoor 60-meter hurdles school-record holder Madison Fleming is back in 2024 after a breakout season on the track a year ago. Fleming took bronze at the 2023 AAC Indoor Championships with her school-record time of 8.28. Teammate Gizel Clayton forms a formidable duo in the event, as the tandem ranks No. 2 (Clayton; 8.34) and No. 3 (Fleming; 8:36) in the AAC this season.
• Will Dibo returns on the men's side after earning a silver medal in the weight throw at last season's AAC Indoor Championships. His season and personal-best mark from the BSC Icebreaker (19.79m / 64'11.25") ranks second in the conference.
• AAC shot-put bronze medalists Sascha Salesius Schmidt and Poorna Raorane each return for the Tigers on the men's and women's squads, respectively. Salesius Schmidt's season-best throw of 17.17 meters is good for No. 2 in The American so far this year. Raorane's season-best mark of 14.88 meters is No. 4 in the AAC on the women's side.
• Gabrielle Cross won the women's 400 meters (55.33, PR) at the BSC Icebreaker on Dec. 1 to open her season. Her time is fifth-fastest in the AAC this season.
