Tigers Drop Midweek Game at Little Rock, Open at FedExPark Tomorrow
Feb 20, 2024 | Baseball
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell behind in the first inning and never recovered as it dropped a mid-week matchup to Little Rock, 10-4, Tuesday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock, Arkansas.
"I just wasn't pleased with our effort," head coach Matt Riser said. "We gave up three in the first and didn't respond very well. After an effort like that, the good thing is we have a chance to get it right and correct it tomorrow.
"Tomorrow is the home opener, and I would hope and expect a lot more effort than we showed today."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Little Rock (2-2) came out swinging and plated three runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
• The Tigers (1-3) scratched back for a pair of runs in the top of the second. Pierre Seals singled to right field, bringing in Daunte Stuart who reached on an error. A sac-fly off the bat of Jonah Sutton drove in Aaron Smigelski to make the score 3-2, Little Rock.
• The Trojans plated another pair of runs in the fourth inning on a double by Jake Wright and an RBI single by Alex Seguine to grow their lead to 5-2. In the fifth, the Trojans tacked on one more on a Skyler Trevino double.
• Memphis fought back for two runs in the sixth on another RBI single by Seals – again scoring Stuart – before Sutton reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Seth Cox making the score 6-4, Trojans.
• Little Rock kept the bats hot and pushed three more across in the seventh, and another in the eighth to take the game by a final of 10-4.
NOTABLES
• Seals and Stuart each tallied a pair of hits in the loss. Seals ended 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, two RBI and a steal. Stuart went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
• Sutton drove in a pair of runs from the eighth spot in the order.
• Memphis' defense turned three double plays in the loss, all different varieties (6-4-3, 4-6-3, 3-6-1).
• Cade Davis made his first start on the mound for the Tigers and went 3.2 innings, taking the loss. The Ripley, Mississippi native allowed five runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking a pair.
