Dec 17, 2024 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's basketball heads downtown for two nationally-televised showdowns this week, playing host to No. 18/16 Tennessee on Wednesday, December 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Louisville on Saturday, December 21, at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday's game will be on ESPNEWS and Saturday's game will be on ESPNU.
Hosted at FedEx Forum, these are the only two games on the Tigers' schedule to be played at the arena. They kicked off the college basketball season with an exhibition at the Forum against No. 2 South Carolina as part of the Hoops for St. Jude Classic on October 15, and a conference game against Florida Atlantic, which Memphis won, 76-56, was moved to the Forum due to snowy conditions on campus. Prior to that, the last time the Tigers played a game downtown was Feb. 7, 2015.
Tilly Boler leads the team with 15.6 points per game. Alasia Smith is first in rebounds (7.4) and steals (2.3) while ranking second in points (11.7).
Game One: Tennessee
The Tigers and Lady Vols face off for the second consecutive season after the in-state rivalry took a 22-year hiatus. In Knoxville last season, 15th-ranked Tennessee escaped with an 84-74 overtime victory in a thrilling contest.
The Lady Vols had a record-breaking day on multiple fronts in their last game, a 139-59 victory over NC Central. They broke the record for three-pointers made in a game (30) and scored the most points in SEC history (139). Samara Spencer set a Lady Vol record with nine three-pointers made as Tennessee improved to 8-0.
Kim Caldwell is in her first year at the helm for the Lady Vols, and her style of play has been on display early in the year. Tennessee leads the country in offensive rebounds (21.8), three-point attempts per game (40.1), steals per game (17.3) and points per game (98.4). South Carolina transfer Talaysia Cooper leads the team in points (20.3) and rebounds (6.1).
Game Two: Louisville
Memphis is set for their 47th matchup with Louisville, leading the all-time series 24 wins to 22. The last time these teams faced off was Feb. 16, 2014, when both teams were in the AAC and Louisville was ranked fourth in the country. The Cardinals won, 82-66, inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Louisville fell to No. 16/19 NC State, 72-42, last Sunday, dropping their record to 6-5. All five of their losses have come to top-25 teams, beginning with the season opener against No. 5/6 UCLA in Paris on Nov. 4.
The Cardinals are led by Jeff Walz, in his 18th season as head coach. He has guided the program to 12 Sweet Sixteens, four Final Fours and two NCAA Championship games. He is currently 35th all-time among active coaches in career wins (470).
Tajianna Roberts (10.9 points) and Olivia Cochran (10.0 points) are the teams two leading scorers through 11 games. With a rotation that usually includes 11 or 12 players, they are 16th in the country in bench points per game (32.7).
