Tigers Fall to Murray State, 87-83

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis women's basketball team and Murray State battled for 40 minutes on Saturday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, with the Tigers dropping the contest, 87-83.
The game was tied at 64 after three quarters, but the Racers (2-2) would hit three fourth-quarter threes after just two in the first half-hour of the game. The Murray State lead hit as high as 13 in the fourth quarter, but Memphis (2-4) used an 8-0 run to propel themselves back into the game before eventually falling.
Tilly Boler posted another 20-point performance, her third of the season and ninth of her career. Alasia Smith had 12 points to go with 12 rebounds and six assists.
The Tigers posted another strong start, holding the Racers to just 11 points in the first stanza and building a nine-point advantage thanks to an effective half-court trap and three-pointers from Elauna Eaton and Layken Cox.
One of the most frequent three-point shooting teams in the country, Murray State was held to just one long ball on nine attempts in the first half as Memphis, 40-35, at the break. Smith found her stride in the third quarter to the tune of six points, three rebounds and two assists as the teams went back and forth.
Murray State grabbed control of the game in the beginning of the fourth, going on a 10-0 run as their three-pointers began to fall. Memphis clawed back in the game with some transition baskets but couldn't level the game before the clock hit zero.
Both teams had exactly 40 rebounds and 14 turnovers. The Tigers maintained a positive assist/turnover ratio, led by Smith's six assists and four from Eaton and Tanyuel Welch. Murray State was led on the scoreboard by Haven Ford, who scored 31 points including 14 at the free throw line.
Memphis will be off for seven days before heading to Johnson City, Tennessee, to take on ETSU on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. CT.
