Tough Test Awaits Tigers vs. No. 9 Charlotte
Oct 04, 2024 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers are set to host a highly ranked Charlotte 49ers squad at the Track & Soccer Complex Saturday night at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Memphis (5-4-1, 2-0-0) comes into tomorrow night's match on a five-match unbeaten streak. Most recently, the Tigers secured a 1-0 victory at Belmont, with the lone goal coming from Anders Bordoy.
After Gabriel Christensen was fouled just outside of the box, Bordoy stepped up and found the bottom left-hand corner of the net for what ended up being the game-winning goal. It was the first career goal for the sophomore from New Kensington, Penn.
With support from his back line, Filip Sabatti earned his fifth win of the season while recording three saves. The reigning AAC Goalkeeper of the Week holds a 5-2-1 record and has a goals-against-average of 1.12.
Heading into the match, Lleyton Imparato leads the Tigers in goal contributions with eight (four goals, four assists). During their current unbeaten streak where the Tigers have outscored their opponents, 9-3, Memphis has found consistency on its back line in Logan Longo and Jackson Kim. The defensive pairing are two of only three Tigers to have started every match. Kim recently earned an AAC weekly honorable mention, and Longo is second on the team in goal contributions with six (three goals, three assists).
Charlotte (6-0-3, 2-0-0) comes into the match ranked ninth in the nation, and has not suffered a loss this season. They have remained unbeaten in all nine matches, including a 2-2 draw against then ranked No. 7 Syracuse in late August.
The 49ers are led by goalkeeper, Leonard Stritter. The junior from Germany has played every minute this season, recording six clean sheets and toting a goals-against-average of 0.56, which is tied for fourth-best in the nation.
The offensive production for Charlotte has come from a large cast of players, as nine different 49ers have recorded a goal this season. Filip Jauk, a former Florida Atlantic transfer, leads the team with four goals. Ben Fisher, a Virginia Tech transfer, leads Charlotte in assist production with four on the season.
Memphis has not fared well against Charlotte historically. The Tigers have a 4-9-3 record in the series. The 49ers won the most recent matchup by a score of 1-0 last season, and the last time Memphis defeated Charlotte was in 2013 during the "Soccer For a Cure" Classic held in Birmingham, Ala.
Following this match, Memphis will travel to Philadelphia, Penn. to take on the Temple Owls on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
