Tigers Travel South to Face Off with Rice

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team continues its American Athletic Conference play this Saturday when they make a trip to Houston, Texas to take on Rice. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
Memphis (6-12, 2-5 AAC) is fresh off a 76-56 win over Florida Atlantic where the Tigers took the victory at FedExForum after winter weather impacts on campus and the Elma Roane Fieldhouse forced the Tigers downtown. While a 28-8 first quarter gave Memphis an early lead, Kai Carter exploded in the second half for a game-high 19 points while putting the Tigers up by as much as 36 during the game.
Along with Carter, Madison Griggs and Alasia Smith reached double-figure scoring while Smith recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. Ki'Ari Cain was dishing it out as well, notching seven assists.
Ten of the 14 Tigers who played scored while the team drained 10 three-pointers in the contest.
For the season, Griggs and Smith have been constants for Memphis on the offensive end with 16.7 and 9.6 points per game, respectively, while Smith has been pulling double duty on the defensive end with a team-high 167 rebounds, 39 steals and 24 blocks.
Rice (11-7, 5-2 AAC) is coming off a loss to Tulsa where the Golden Hurricane used a 38-22 lead going into halftime. While the Owls fought back – and even tied the game up in the fourth quarter – late free throws from Tulsa ended in the 70-65 final.
For the season, Dominique Ennis leads the team with 13.5 points per game while Malia Fisher has pulled down a team-best 108 rebounds.
As a team, Rice is ranked in the top-40 in D-I in bench points per game (25.3) and free throw percentage (77.3).
Memphis and Rice are no stranger to one another; the former Conference USA teams have met a total of 11 times in the past with the Tigers taking six of the last seven match-ups.
