Tigers Dominate UAB in Season Opener

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis men's tennis head coach Chris Doerr earned his first-career victory as the Tigers opened the season with a 6-1 win over UAB Friday evening in front of a packed house at the Leftwich Tennis Facility.
The win propelled the Tigers to 1-0 for the third time in four years.
"It was a good match today," Doerr said. "UAB is a good team, so we knew we had to be ready to go in the first match. I thought the doubles point was very solid and I thought we played well in singles in the beginning.
"I emphasized to the guys about trying to start better and get going in the beginning and we did it.
Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after taking the first two doubles.
Conor Gannon and Harry Rock swept their matchup 6-0 on court No. 2, before Maxime Dubouch and Pau Fanlo captured the point with a 6-3 decision at the third position.
The Tigers continued their success into singles play as Gannon quickly captured a 6-1, 6-1 win on court two. Dubouch followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position to give Memphis a 3-0 lead.
Rock clinched the match behind a 6-2, 6-3 win on court five.
Alemany (6-2, 6-4) and Fanlo (6-2, 6-3) also emerged with straight-set victories at the first and third lines to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage before UAB earned the final point of the night (7-6, 7-6) on court four.
"We loved having the crowd here and I thought they did an unreal job," Doerr said. "It was great seeing over 250 people up there. We are excited to see where the season goes."

Memphis is back on the court Wednesday (Jan. 17) when the Tigers host No. 10 Harvard at 6 p.m. at Leftwich Tennis Center.
