Tigers Drop Heartbreaker in Extras at Tulane
Apr 02, 2023 | Baseball
With the setback, Memphis moves to 16-13 on the season overall and 1-2 in the American Athletic Conference to conclude the first weekend of AAC play.
"The guys competed well today and fought back after we were down and got ourselves in the lead," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We had a chance to win the game, things just didn't go our way. I'm really proud of how our guys played and battled this weekend. It's tough to come into an environment the first conference weekend and play as tough as we did. This is a learning point and we're going to grow from this and we will be better."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis struck first with a run in the first inning. Austin Baskin tripled off the left-center field wall and Logan Kohler banged an RBI single to right field to get the Tigers on the board.
• Tulane got its first run on a sac-fly in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.
• In the top of the third, Anthony Hansen hit a ball to deep left field that ricocheted off the top of the wall and allowed him to come all the way around for an inside-the-park solo homerun, his seventh of the year.
• The Green Wave strung some hits together in the fourth inning and plated three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
• In the seventh, Brayland Skinner singled through the left side with two outs to bring in Jonah Sutton from second. Five pitches later, Hansen slugged a double to the left-field corner and scored Skinner to tie the game at 4-4.
• Lefty swingman JT Durham entered in the seventh inning to replace Tiger starter Seth Garner, who went six innings while allowing four runs on five hits. Durham threw two innings of one-hit ball before handing the ball off to closer Dalton Kendrick in the ninth.
• Kendrick threw up zeroes in the ninth and tenth innings, then the Tigers led off the 11th inning with three-consecutive singles. The third of those came off the bat of Jake Curtis and drove in Shane Cox to give Memphis a 5-4 lead.
• Kendrick came back out in the 11th for his third inning of work and recorded two outs before a hit batsman set up an at-bat for Tulane' Teo Banks, who delivered a two-run, walk-off homerun to make the Green Wave 6-5 winners.
NOTABLES
• Baskin finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with a triple and a run scored, marking his 12th multi-hit game this season and raising his season average to .318.
• Hansen was 2-for-6 from the leadoff spot with a double, two RBI and an inside-the-park homerun for his seventh of the year. The senior from Columbia, Mo., has hit safely in 23-of-27 games this season and leads Memphis with a .330 season average.
• New Orleans native Will Spears ended the day 2-for-5.
• Kohler, RJ Jimerson, Cox, Sutton, Curtis and Skinner all tallied one hit in the game. The Tigers had 13 hits as a team compared to Tulane's eight.
• Kendrick took the loss and moves to 1-2 on the year.
