Tigers Head to Bowling Green for WNIT Super Sixteen
Mar 22, 2023 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will hit the road for the first time in the WNIT when they make the trip up to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on the Falcons in the Super Sixteen round this Thursday night.
Memphis (22-10) is coming off an explosive start against Ball State; the Tigers would open the game on a 20-0 run, that included long range shots from Jamirah Shutes and Madison Griggs, while holding the Cardinals scoreless for nearly six minutes. Memphis would never surrender their lead as they picked up the 79-62 win.
With the win, it is the furthest the team has gotten in the WNIT since the 1999 season, and they are now the last remaining AAC women's basketball team still playing in the postseason.
The team has been on a tear the last six weeks, going 10-1 through February and March while outrebounding their opponents by nearly 11 rebounds per game and forcing them into over 15 turnovers per contest. The trio of Shutes, Griggs and Emani Jefferson has led the team in scoring while Jefferson, Hannah Riddick and Destiny Thomas have cleaned up on the boards for the Tigers with nearly half of the team's rebounds.
Bowling Green (29-6) is coming off an 18-point win over Green Bay where Allison Day put up a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds while Elissa Brett and Lexi Fleming added in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Along with the double-figure scorers, Amy Velasco would come off the bench for the Falcons and dish out 11 assists.
A defensive strong second-quarter would see BGSU hold Green Bay to just five points. They would take the 30-22 lead into halftime – and never surrender that lead throughout the remainder of the game.
For the season, Brett, Day and Nyla Hampton lead the team in scoring while Brett and Jocelyn Tate have combined for 410 rebounds.
This will be the first meeting all-time for Memphis and Bowling Green.
Thursday's game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. CT tip-off with coverage available on ESPN3 and 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
