AKRON, Ohio – University of Memphis senior Angeline Henry and freshman Gabriela Zych had tremendous showings in air rifle at the 2023 NCAA Championships on Saturday in Akron, Ohio.
Henry took fourth overall in air rifle, while Zych finished in 11th place for the Tigers. Henry shot a 596 to qualify for the individual final in the event and then posted a 595 to take fourth place. Zych tallied a 595 to finish in 11th place for Memphis.
"I am so proud of Angeline and Gabriela's performances at NCAA's," head coach Morgan Phillips said. "They both shot great - with Angeline missed a medal by one tenth of a point, and Gabriela missing the final by one point. I think this is very indicative of where our program is heading and I can't wait to see what we can do next season. It was a great day to be a Tiger!"
With the NCAA Championships, the 2022-23 season has come to a close for the Tigers. The year was a memorable one for Memphis, as Phillips was named the GARC Coach of the Year, Henry was named Second-Team All-GARC in air rifle and honorable mention All-GARC in both smallbore and combined, Zych was named honorable-mention All-GARC in air rifle and Sophia Cruz was Memphis' honoree as GARC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Phillips guided the Tigers to a ranking as high as No. 10 on the year. Memphis posted victories over No. 9 Army, No. 14 Jacksonville State, No. 12 NC State and No. 19 UT Martin. The team also set the school records in air rifle and aggregate twice and smallbore once on the season.
