MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis track and field teams are set to split squads this weekend and compete in Birmingham, Ala., at the Samford Bulldog Invite (Friday) and Samford Bulldog Open (Saturday) as well as Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tenn. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11. The Tigers will take the track for the fourth-consecutive weekend as they prepare for the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championships scheduled for Feb. 24-25.
"The goal for our throws group going to Birmingham is to get as many reps as possible, make finals and continue to improve," head coach Kevin Robinson said. "The goal for the rest of the team at Vanderbilt is to utilize the very competitive fields and in turn produce some season-best and personal-best times. This will be the last competitive effort for most track athletes before the conference meet. Some of the field event athletes will do a final tune up next weekend."
Field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Nashville on Friday morning with running events to follow at 5 p.m. and will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. In Birmingham, action kicks off at 10 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
NOTABLES
• Graduate student Cole Riddle broke the AAC pole-vault record last time out at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational with a meet-winning mark of 5.64m (18'6") and was named AAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 7 for his performance. In addition, Riddle was named AAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 31 for his then school-record breaking and meet-winning performance at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. Riddle's AAC-leading clearance of 5.64m (18'6") was a lifetime personal-best vault (indoors and outdoors) and currently ranks No. 5 in the NCAA.
• Thrower Amber Simpson launched a 20.81-meter (68'3.25") throw to win the women's weight throw and move to No. 2 all-time in the event at Memphis. Her mark is second-best in the conference this season and ranks 23rd nationally.
• In the 60-meter hurdles, Madison Fleming took down a 13-year-old school record with her time of 8.36 in the prelims at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. Fleming finished fifth in the final with a time of 8.45, which also would have broken the record previously owned by Tayanna Simpson. Her time is currently sixth-fastest in the AAC.
• Graduate student Alyssa Morello was named American Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 24 for her runner-up performance in the pole vault at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Morello's AAC-leading mark of 4.23m (13'10.5") was good for No. 2 in program history and currently ranks 17th in the NCAA.
