Tigers Take On Cincinnati, SMU
Feb 21, 2023 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team is on a hot streak, and they will look to continue that trend this week when they host the Bearcats of Cincinnati on Wednesday night and head to Dallas to face-off with SMU on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis (16-9, 8-4 AAC) has been on a dominating run as of late; the Tigers are on a four-game winning streak and have taken victories in seven of their last eight games. A big contribution with that comes from the duo of Jamirah Shutes and Madison Griggs who are leading the team with a combined 27.2 points per game.
The Tigers are coming off a stunning 69-44 win at Tulsa that saw four Tigers score in double figures, force the Golden Hurricane into 23 turnovers and put Griggs in an elite club as she surpassed 1,000 career points with Memphis.
In their last four games, Memphis has held their opponents to 60 points or less and has grabbed 30 more rebounds than them.
Cincinnati (9-17, 2-11 AAC) is struggling to find a groove this season - falling to Tulane and ECU in their last two games. Mya Jackson led the team with a 15-point performance while going 6-13 from the field while Jillian Hayes grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds against the Green Wave.
Hayes currently leads the team in points and rebounds while Jackson has a team-best 68 assists.
It was all Memphis when the two teams met earlier this season as the Tigers cruised to the 78-58 win in Fifth Third Arena. After taking a two-point lead into halftime, Memphis would come out with a 23-12 advantage in the third quarter. The Tigers would also force 24 Bearcat turnovers while getting double-digit scoring performances from Shutes, Griggs and Riddick.
SMU (15-9, 6-6 AAC) dropped back-to-back games last week after taking on Tulane and South Florida.
After hanging with the Bulls in the first half, SMU's offense would struggle in the third quarter. The Mustangs were held to just nine points and turned the ball over four times in the ten-minute span. A back-and-forth fourth quarter would take it down to the wire, but SMU would end up falling 70-62.
Savannah Wilkinson, Chante Embry and Reagan Bradley all scored in double figures for the Mustangs while the team forced South Florida into 17 turnovers.
When the two teams met earlier this season, Memphis jumped all over SMU from the start. After a 15-point lead going into halftime, the Tigers did not let up as they took the 80-51 win in the Fieldhouse.
Emani Jefferson, Tanuyel Welch and Jamriah Shutes led the team with a combined 43 points while Hannah Riddick grabbed 11 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end.
Wednesday's game against Cincinnati is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse while Sunday's game at SMU will start at 12 p.m. Coverage of Wednesday's game can be found on ESPN+ while Sunday's game will be broadcasted on ESPNU. Both games can be found on 98.9 FM The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
