Feb 20, 2023 | Rifle
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis senior Angeline Henry and freshman Gabriela Zych both earned bids to the 2023 NCAA Championships in air rifle.
"We are so thrilled to be extending our season with Gabriela and Angeline qualifying for NCAA's," head coach Morgan Phillips said. "They have been working hard and are very thankful for the opportunity. I think having both qualify, as well as having both alternates for air rifle from Memphis is indicative of where our program is heading. We're ready to keep working hard over the next couple weeks and see what we can do in the postseason!"
Hosted by Akron, the championships will be held March 10-11 at the James A. Rhodes Arena. A total of 51 student-athletes will compete in the championships, with 40 coming from the top-eight teams selected. The remaining 11, including Henry and Zych, were selected based on the scores submitted from the NCAA Qualifier.
Both Sophia Cruz and Jack Kersey were named as alternates in air rifle if any of the individual competitors in the event are unable to participate.
Individual and team competitions in smallbore will be held Friday, March 10, while air rifle individual and team competition will be held on Saturday, March 11.
On the season, Henry has posted an average score of 594.154 in air rifle, while Zych is averaging 593.077. Last season, Henry placed 36th at the NCAA Championships in air rifle.
Before the NCAA Championships, the Tigers will compete in the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships from Feb. 25-26 in Morgantown, W.V.
