Jan 25, 2023 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers look to continue the momentum and extend their win streak Thursday night for a Black Out when SMU comes to FedExForum for an American Athletic Conference showdown on ESPN2 at 6 p.m.
Memphis (15-5, 5-2 AAC) earned a 75-68 win at Cincinnati Sunday afternoon for its third-straight victory and fourth in five games. The win helped move the Tigers to third in the league standings, trailing only Houston (6-1) and Temple (6-2).
They return to the building where they've won 15-straight. The last loss was over a year ago, a 70-62 defeat at the hands of SMU on Jan. 20, 2022.
Memphis leads the all-time series with the Mustangs 16-15, despite dropping two of the three matchups last season. The Tigers lost both regular season meetings, before getting the best of SMU in the AAC Tournament semifinals, 70-63.
Mustang fans will see a familiar face Thursday when they visit as fifth-year guard Kendric Davis is now roaming the court for the Tigers after spending the last three seasons in Dallas.
In his time with the Mustangs, Davis recorded 1,315 points (17.5 ppg), 300 rebounds (4.0 rpg) and 445 assists (5.9 apg) across 75 career games. He was the 2021-22 AAC Player of the Year, a two-time first team All-AAC selection and led the conference in scoring the past two seasons.
Another familiar face is Jahmar Young Jr., who also transferred to Memphis from SMU in the spring. He played in 37 games over the last two seasons for the Mustangs.
The Memphis coaching staff also has a tie to SMU. Assistant to the head coach Shawn Forrest was an assistant coach at SMU for three seasons from 2016-19, which included SMU's 30-5 2016-17 campaign.
After Thursday's game, the Tigers head to Tulsa Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. That game will conclude a stretch of three straight Sunday road games. Memphis then returns to FedExForum to host Tulane on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Thursday's game is presented by Regional One Health. The first 3,000 fans through the doors will get a black out Memphis t-shirt. The night will also continue the celebration of the 1972-73 team with 1,000 Billy Buford bobbleheads being handed out at the gates.
