Jan 24, 2023 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will split their week between the road and at home when they travel to take on the Pirates of East Carolina on Wednesday night before hosting the Bulls of South Florida on Saturday afternoon.
Memphis (11-8, 3-3 AAC) is coming off their second consecutive conference win after taking down Temple this past Saturday night. Madison Griggs led the team with 14 points while Emani Jefferson and Hannah Riddick combined for 24 points and 18 rebounds. Jefferson would have a career night on the offensive end, recording seven assists during the game while also blocking three shots.
As a team, the Tigers are leading the conference in free throw attempts per game and made free throws per game while are coming in second in the AAC in offensive rebounds and total rebounds per game.
Jamirah Shutes currently leads the team with 14.2 points per game while Griggs is adding in just over 12 points per contest.
East Carolina (14-6, 5-2 AAC) comes into Wednesday's game off the program's first win inside Charles Koch Arena after they got the 66-57 win over Wichita State. The Pirates had three players score in double figures while the team forced the Shockers into 27 turnovers.
Danae McNeal leads the team with 16.3 points per game while Amiya Joyner is adding in 9.6 points and just over seven rebounds. As a team, ECU's aggressive defense has them forcing more than 26 turnovers per game, a stat that ranks them first in the AAC.
Earlier this season when the Tigers and Pirates met, ECU got the better of Memphis with the 55-47 win. A 21-point fourth quarter from East Carolina would give them their first lead since the end of the first half as they shot 63% from the field in the final 10 minutes of the game.
South Florida (18-4, 7-0 AAC) remains one of just two teams still undefeated in American Athletic Conference play after they took down Houston and Central Florida last week.
In their most recent game, the Bulls cruised to an 83-51 win over the Knights behind 21 points from Elena Tsineke and a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds from Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu.
For the season, Tsineke, Fankam Mendjiadeu and Sammie Puisis lead the team in scoring while Fankam Mendjiadeu is averaging a double-double with 12.4 rebounds per game – which ranks her first in the league.
The Bulls and Tigers met just a couple of week ago in Tampa where the USF defense would hold Memphis to just eight points in both the first and third quarters.
Wednesday's game in Greenville is scheduled for a 5 p.m. CT tip-off while Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Coverage of both games can be found on ESPN+ and on 98.9 FM The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
