MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Athletic Department will celebrate the 901Women initiative and the last 50 years of accomplishments in its women's programs on Jan. 27 and 28.
The public is invited to attend a 901Women Leadership Panel and Reception presented by Simmons Bank on Friday, Jan. 27 from 6-8 p.m. in the Maxine A. Smith University Center Theatre. Mary Ellen Pethel, author of Title IX, Pat Summitt, and Tennessee's Trailblazers, will moderate a panel of women who have helped to pave the way for women's athletics. A reception will follow the discussion.
"I am thrilled to host a weekend that will showcase and celebrate the rich history of women's athletics at the University of Memphis," said Executive Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator Lauren Ashman. "The impact that our own Tiger Trailblazers have had on the growth of women's athletics within our state is incredible and it is an honor that we will be able to share their stories as part of our celebration."
The celebration continues Saturday, Jan. 28 for 901Women Day at the Memphis Tiger women's basketball game against South Florida, sponsored by Simmons Bank. To celebrate 50 years since the passing of Title IX and National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Memphis Athletics will recognize all Memphis women's athletic alumni in attendance and host a post-game clinic for youth (grade 6 and younger) in attendance. Limited quantities of a special Title IX commemorative t-shirt will be given away at the game.
Alumni of Memphis women's athletic programs interested in attending the game can email Christina Wiatr at ctwiatr@memphis.edu.
"I also can't think of a better way to honor Elma Roane's contributions to our university than by filling the Fieldhouse for a key matchup against South Florida," said Ashman. "901Women is incredibly grateful for our women who embody the mission and spirit of this initiative and I hope this weekend expands the knowledge, interest and appreciation of our past, present and goals we have yet to achieve."
The 901Women initiative has been established to honor 50 years of competitive and academic excellence within Memphis' sports programs since the passage of Title IX in 1972. In addition, this initiative intends to inspire and generate philanthropic support for the enhancement of athletic, academic and personal experiences for current and future female student-athletes at the University of Memphis.
Questions regarding these events or the 901Women initiative can be emailed to 901Women@memphis.edu.
