STARKVILLE, Miss. – The University of Memphis football team fell on the road at No. RV/RV Mississippi State, 49-23, on Saturday night at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Miss.
Sophomore quarterback Seth Henigan had 165 yards on 19-of-30 passing with a touchdown and a rushing score, while redshirt sophomore running back Jevyon Ducker rushed for 63 yards on five carries, including a 50-yard TD. Redshirt senior wide receiver Eddie Lewis had a game-high six receptions for 38 yards to go with a 15-yard score.
Defensively, defensive lineman Jaylon Allen had a career-high 12 tackles and a sack for the Tigers, while redshirt senior defensive back Quindell Johnson had nine stops, an interception and a fumble recovery. Redshirt freshman linebacker Andrew Jones had four tackles and forced his first career fumble.
A slow start and a lengthy, two hour and 15-minute lightning delay saw Memphis down to the Bulldogs, 28-3, at the half. The Tigers played better in the second half, putting together three scoring drives.
Despite the setback to SEC foe Mississippi State, Memphis is 6-3 in their last nine, regular-season games against Power 5 opponents.
The Memphis Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when the team travels to Annapolis, Md. to face AAC foe Navy. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be televises on CBS Sports Network.
