Merriweather Inks Championship-Winning Transfer for 2022-23 Season
May 23, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Memphis women's basketball head coach Katrina Merriweather signed another notable transfer for the upcoming season in Shelbee Brown.
Â
"Shelbee was a no brainer as she brings toughness, athleticism and a desire to represent her city," said Merriweather. "Her ability to knock down shots, get to the rim, as well as defend made her a must-have going into next season."
Â
Brown, a local Memphian, comes back home to the 901 after two seasons with Northwest Florida State College where she helped lead her team to a 2020-21 NJCAA National Championship. Brown played in all 26 games while making 23 starts for the Raiders as a freshman while averaging 7.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She would go on to post four double-doubles and was second on the team in steals.
Â
In her sophomore year, the 5-11 forward started in 27 games while making 28 appearances while averaging just over 10 points per game and shooting an astounding 49.2% from the field. Brown would help her team to a 27-3 overall record and a trip to the FCSAA/NJCAA District Tournament Championship Game – where they collected a 41-point victory with Brown nearly missing a double-double of 10 points and nine rebounds.Â
Â
A Whitehaven graduate, Brown led her team to the TSSAA Division I State Title Game. During her prep career, Brown averaged just over 12 points per game while grabbing 8.6 rebounds.
Â
"The magic thing about home (Memphis), is that it feels good to explore other places, but it feels even better to return. I'm excited to be joining this program and to be home to play in front of my family," said Brown.
Â
Brown chose Memphis over Clemson, Mississippi State, Dayton, UTC and Southern Illinois.
