Tigers Drop Cayman Islands Classic Finale to St. Johns
Nov 29, 2025 | Women's Basketball
GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands – Memphis women's basketball was defeated by St. John's, 84-73, on Saturday evening in the final game of the Cayman Islands Classic.
The Tigers (4-5) forced 21 turnovers, including 17 in the first half, but the Red Storm (7-1) shot a season-high 60.4% when they were able to beat the Memphis press. Four players scored double-figures for the Tigers, most of which Chaé Harris with 13. Daejah Richmond had 12, while Tamya Smith and Jordan Hunter each had 11.
The stingy Memphis defense forced five turnovers in the opening few minutes, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before St. John's broke the ice with a three-pointer. The Red Storm settled in and were red-hot when they weren't turning it over, shooting 81% in the frame to lead, 23-13, despite nine turnovers.
St. John's remained red-hot from the field in the second quarter, shooting 73% behind three long balls. Memphis matched it through Brooklyn Alexander, who exploded for a career-high three three-pointers and nine points all in the second frame.
The game script played out similarly to Friday night's battle with Florida; the Tigers trailed by as much as 17 but responded with a run of their own to get back into the game. Nonetheless, they couldn't get any closer than their eight-point halftime deficit.
Sa'Mya Wyatt had a season-high 22 points for St. John's, and Brooke Moore posted a double-double behind 20 points and 11 boards. The Red Storm offense cooled a bit in the second half, but the lack of misses led to a 38-28 rebounding advantage. Memphis grabbed just eight boards in the first half.
The Tigers will return to the States and be back in action Sunday, December 7, at 1:00 p.m. at MTSU. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
