Nov 28, 2025 | Women's Basketball
GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands – Memphis women's basketball battled fiercely but fell to Florida, 74-60, on night one of the Cayman Islands Classic at John Gray Gymnasium.
The Tigers (4-4) held Florida (7-1) to nine points less than their season average, fueled by a first-half where the Gators scored just 31 points on 28% shooting. Florida would score 43 in the second half, however, and hold Memphis to just 31% shooting.
Daejah Richmond led Memphis in scoring with 19 points, drawing six fouls and getting eight points at the charity stripe. Tamya Smith added 15 and six rebounds.
Florida's Liv McGill, who was third in the country in scoring, posted 27 points on 11-for-29 shooting, turning it over seven times. The Tigers held the All-American candidate to 10 points in the first half, but McGill and Me'Arah O'Neal kicked into gear in the second half, combining for 32 after the break.
Memphis' offense found some form in the second half, hitting both of their two threes through Chaé Harris and Richmond. The Florida lead spent the fourth quarter fluctuating from 19 to 12, as the Tigers remained inspired but could not make any significant dent in the deficit.
The Gators mauled the offensive glass in the first half, grabbing 14 of their 18 offensive boards. They won the rebounding battle, 51-39, on the night. Memphis turned it over a season-low 12 times on the evening, forcing 16 Florida cough-ups.
The Cayman Island Classic will conclude Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. CT when Memphis battles St. John's. The game will again be streamed on FloCollege.com
