Women’s Basketball Welcomes Wichita State to Town for Senior Day Match-Up

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Tigers welcome the Shockers to town for their final weekend home game of the season; Memphis will also celebrate Senior Day on Saturday's game against Wichita State.
The Tigers (14-9, 5-7 AAC) are coming off a statement win over SMU this past Wednesday where three players scored in double figures; Alana Davis led the team with 18 points on 7-11 shooting while Jamirah Shutes and Emani Jefferson added in 15 and 13 points, respectively. Shutes also joined an elite club, crossing the 1,000-point threshold on a completed -and one play with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
As a team, Memphis held the Mustangs to nearly 10 points below their season average while gaining an early 25-11 lead to work on.
For the season, Shutes has been the Tiger's go-to on the offensive end with 11.6 points per game while Jefferson and Davis are not far behind her with 9.7 and 8.2 points per contest. Tyler Frierson and Lanetta Williams have been hard at work on the boards with 5.9 and 5.2 rebounds per game, respectively, while Jefferson, Shutes and Maya Stovall have dished out more than 60% of the team's assists this season.
With just three conference games left in the season, Memphis finds themselves sitting in 6th place in the American Athletic Conference standings.
Wichita State (12-12, 3-8 AAC) is coming off a 60-35 loss to UCF on Wednesday night. The Shockers were held to just 14 combined points through the 2nd and 3rd quarters and were outscored by the Knights 43-16 in the second half. Asia Strong was the only player from Wichita State to score in double figures with 12 points.
For the season, Mariah McCully leads the team with 11.6 points per game while Strong is adding in just over 10 points per contest. Jane Asinde has been the Shockers main rebounder with 201 total rebounds and nearly 9.0 rebounds per game this season.
As a team, WSU has outrebounded their opponents by nearly five per game and grabbing 15.5 offensive rebounds – a mark that is 15thbest in Division I.
The Tigers and Shockers met nearly four weeks again when Memphis made the trip up to Kansas. In search of their first AAC win of the season, Memphis escaped with a 50-49 victory. Shutes paces the team with 15 points and five assists while Shutes, Lanetta Williams, Tyler Frierson and Hannah Riddick all grabbed six rebounds each.
Wichita State, who forced Memphis into 25 turnovers, dug their way back from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to get within one of the Tiger with four seconds left. But Memphis was able to take care of the ball in the final seconds of the game to come away with the win.
Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off with coverage of the game available on ESPN+ and on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
Memphis will also honor the 2021-22 senior class of Tyler Frierson, Maya Stovall, Jatyjia Jones, Jamriah Shutes and Alana Davisfollowing the game.
