Tigers Split Opening Day of College Challenge

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico. – The Memphis Tigers softball team kicked off their 2022 season today in the opening day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. While the Tigers were able to walk away with a win over Rutgers, they suffered the 3-1 loss to Lamar.
Following today's games, Memphis moves to 1-1 overall.

GAME ONE: MEMPHIS: 6, RUTGERS: 3
How it happened:
- Rutgers struck first in the top of the 5th inning when Gabrielle Callaway singled to the left side and put the Scarlet Knights up 2-0.
- They would further extend their lead on a double steal make it a 3-0 game.
- Camryn Wineinger put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the 5th inning with the homerun over the centerfield fence to cut Memphis' deficit to one.
- Continuing their scoring trend in the 5th innings, Kendall Lee and Gracie Morton drove in a combined three runs to put Memphis up 6-3.
- Rutgers would attempt a comeback in the 6th and 7th innings, but the Tiger defense would hold strong and run away with the 6-3 win.
Notables:
- Mikayla Hoschak got the start for Memphis going 4.0 innings while Jenna Gibson got the win going 3.0 innings with one strikeout.
- Wineinger notched the Tigers first homerun of the season.
- Memphis scored all six of their runs on six hits.
GAME TWO: MEMPHIS: 1, LAMAR: 3
How it happened:
- Lamar recorded their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning off a Tiger error to take an early 1-0 lead.
- The Cardinals added in runs in the 3rd and 6th innings to push their lead out to 3-0.
- Memphis would get a run back in the top of the 7th inning when Dafne Mercado sent a ball into right field and brought Presley Morris across home plate.
- Despite cutting their deficit, the Tigers were unable to connect for more runs and suffered the 3-1 loss.
Notables:
- Hallie Siems got her first start of the season in the circle pitching a complete game. Siems recorded four strikeouts.
- Morton, Mercado and Lucero all recorded hits in game two.
- The Tigers will compete in the second day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge tomorrow.
- Memphis will face-off against Long Beach at 10 a.m. and #8/9 Arkansas at 12:30 p.m.
