Nov 06, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will open up a new season tomorrow evening when they tip-off the 2022-23 season inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse when they host Columbia University.
Memphis, who finished last season 16-12 overall, saw a complete turnaround in the first year of the Katrina Merriweather Era. The Tigers would go on to quadruple their win total from the 2020-21 season, record the programs first 15+ win season since the 2015-16 season and went their entire non-conference schedule without a blemish on their home court.
The Tigers return notable starters Jamirah Shutes, Emani Jefferson and Maddie Griggs while bring in a slate of new faces to the Bluff City.
Memphis would make it to the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference tournament after receiving the program's highest AAC Championship seeding in seven years.
Fans got a first look at Memphis last week when they hosted Rust College in an exhibition match. The Tigers, who saw all 12 players score in the game, went on to win 84-51 after outscoring the Bearcats 44-24 in the second half.
Columbia is coming off the program's most historical run after going 25-7 overall and 12-2 in the Ivy League. The Lions would end up with a bid to the Women's National Invitational Tournament and play their way to the quarterfinals.
The Lions return their both of their top scorers from last season in Abbey Hsu and Kaitlyn Davis. The duo would combine for nearly half of Columbia's points/game last season.
Monday's season opener will be the first time that Memphis and Columbia have met in program history.
Tip-off for the Tiger's season opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com.
