STARKVILLE, Miss. – Another fall weekend is in the books after the Memphis women's team challenged itself at the John Cade Invitational hosted by Mississippi State. The Tigers put forth another strong showing with 16 total victories in a round-robin slate against the host Bulldogs, Louisville and Louisiana Tech.
Memphis mixed its lineup over the three days, resulting in three doubles victories and 13 wins in singles action.
The Tigers trotted out eight different pairings in Starkville with Monique Woog and Camila Soares earning a pair of wins. The duo defeated Louisiana Tech 9-8(5) on day one before disposing of Mississippi State 8-3 on day two.
Woog had a hand in all three doubles wins as she teamed up with Emily Soares to down Louisville 8-4 on Friday.
In singles action, the Tigers were paced by three wins apiece from Aran Teixidó Garcia and Dolavee Tumthong, while Miriam Grosmann and Woog each earned two.
The biggest win of the weekend came from court one on Sunday when Teixidó Garcia came from behind to take down No. 52 Emmanouela Antonaki of Mississippi State in three sets 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3. That win came after earning straight-set decisions against Leonie Schuknecht of Louisiana Tech (6-1, 6-2) and Louisville's No. 1 Rhea Verma (6-2, 6-1).
Tumthong was unbeaten in her three singles matches, taking down Sasha Gorchanyuk of Louisville 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 on day one before beating La Tech's Ilana Tetruashvili 6-2, 6-3 and Alexia Romero 6-1, 6-0.
After earning three wins in doubles, Woog picked up two more victories in singles. She rallied from behind to knock off La Tech's Tiffani Nash (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) before taking care of Louisville's Arielle Nealy in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
Grosmann bounced back over the final two days to capture a tiebreak win against MSU's Sydney Hrehor 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(5) before wrapping up the weekend with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against State's Dharani Niroshan.
"More great experience for the Tigers over the weekend and it was great to see our improvement throughout," head coach Hayden Perez said. "The girls are getting more and more match-tough every time out and I am already looking forward to our last tournament of the fall in two weeks, Go Tigers Go!"
