Tigers Continue Conference Action at Cincinnati and East Carolina
Sep 30, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Off of a win over Temple that opened home-conference play, the Memphis Tigers (8-6, 1-1) will spend the weekend on the road with matches at Cincinnati (6-4, 1-1) and East Carolina (5-6, 1-1). Friday's 5:30 p.m. match vs. the Bearcats will be available on ESPN+, while Sunday's 11 a.m. matinee vs. the Pirates will be streamed live.
The weekend opens with the matchup against the Bearcats, who began conference play last weekend with a five-set win over USF but were then swept on the road against UCF. The loss to UCF ended Cincinnati's five match winning streak, which included a win at Notre Dame, which received votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll heading into that matchup. The Bearcats were also swept by #3 Kentucky as part of the Dayton Tournament earlier this season.
The Tigers and Bearcats have a storied history that covers more than 50 matches dating back to 1979. Cincinnati holds a 31-23 edge in the all-time series and has won seven straight against the Tigers. Memphis' last win vs. the Bearcats came in Memphis, Nov. 11, 2015, while the Tigers' last win at Cincinnati was Sept. 23, 2015. Memphis had won seven straight in the series before the current Cincinnati seven-match win streak.
A matchup with the Pirates ends the weekend and concludes the brief road trip for the Tigers. Like Cincinnati, East Carolina opened American Athletic Conference play with a pair of road matches against the two Florida teams. Like the Bearcats, the Pirates were swept by UCF and picked up a win at USF. East Carolina opened the season 0-4, which included losses at NC State and North Carolina, but is 5-2 since then and hosts SMU Friday night before the Tigers head to the home of the Pirates.
Dating back to 1980, the Tigers and Pirates have met 32 times, with Memphis victorious in 23 of those matches. This included a 12-match win streak for Memphis from 2007 to 2014. East Carolina ended that streak with a win in Nov. 2014 and holds a 6-4 edge over the last 10 meetings between the teams. The Tigers picked up a five-set win in Greenville last time the programs met, Oct. 27, 2019.
