Tigers Finish Season Opening Home Stand with Kansas, Alabama

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After collecting big time wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Indiana this past weekend, the Tigers will finish up their season opening home stand when Kansas and Alabama come to town on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
Memphis had quite the opening to the weekend; the team scored eight goals in their shutout win over UAPB, where they also celebrated their senior class. That marks the first time the team had scored that many goals in a match since the 2003 season. The Tigers wrapped up their weekend with a big 1-0 win over a tough Indiana team after Aubrey Mister, who won this week's AAC Rookie of the Week Award, headed in the game-winning goal in the 49'.
"These last two games were great examples of the girl's really working together as a unit. They overcame challenges and truly exhibited their grit and determination to grind out those wins," said head coach Brooks Monaghan.
The Tigers will open this weekend with a Kansas (2-1-1) team who is coming off a two-win weekend over Saint Louis and Iowa.
After playing 90 minutes with no score, the Jayhawks and Hawkeyes went into overtime; just three minutes into extra play, Raena Childers netted her first collegiate goal to give KU the 1-0 win.
"Kansas got the best of us a couple of years ago, and it was a great match, but I think where we currently are in the season is a respectable place to be to give us the best chance to win," said Monaghan.
Alabama, who will face off against Samford before making their way to town, comes into the week 3-1-0 overall after back-to-back wins over Lamar and Southern Mississippi this past Friday and Sunday, respectively.
After a 3-1 win over the Cardinals, the Crimson Tide would battle with USM in a physical match-up. While Alabama took a 2-0 lead after a goal from Ashlynn Serepca in the 54', Southern Mississippi would rally for two goals late in the second half to tie the match and sent it to overtime. It wouldn't be until the 107' of play when Felicia Knox knocked a golden goal in to claim the 3-2 (2OT) win.
"Alabama is a quality opponent and is not a team to be taken lightly," said Monaghan. "While we made strides this past weekend, we are going to have to push even further to be able to pull out wins over these strong squads."
