Tigers drop series opener at ECU

Greenville, N.C. – The Tigers dropped the opener of their final regular season series at East Carolina 8-1. ECU scored five of their eight runs on two home runs.
Mariah Nichols got the start in the circle for the University of Memphis. Nichols went five innings, giving up four runs on four hits. Kailey Hilderbrand entered the circle to start the sixth inning for the Tigers. Hilderbrand had a tough outing, only going one third of an inning, giving up four runs on four hits. Chyanne Ellett finished out the game for the Tigers.
Kama Woodall started in the circle for the Pirates. Woodall came into the weekend with a team leading 7-18 and a 3.66 era. Woodall threw her 14th complete game of the season for ECU. She only gave up one run on six hits.
East Carolina struck first, with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Olivia Narron walked, Rachel McCollum hit a double down the left field line to score Narron from first. Two batters later, McCollum scored on a single to center by Bailey Levinda to give ECU the 2-0 lead.
The Tigers got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. After Gracie Morton hit a double to center and LaNya Bates hit a single through the left side, Baylee Smith bunted Morton home to cut the lead to 2-1. The Pirates ended the Tigers momentum with an inning ending double play.
ECU extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Levinda hit a two run home run. The Pirates had a big inning in the sixth. McCollum added a run for ECU on a single to left field. Then with two runners on, Chandley Garner hit a three run home run to left field, giving East Carolina the 8-1 lead.
The Tigers drop to 9-37(2-19) and the Pirates improve to 13-32(4-17).

The Tigers will continue their four game series at ECU with a double header Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM.
