GREENVILLE, N.C. – A season of challenges and adaptations came to a close for the Memphis Tigers Wednesday afternoon, as the squad dropped a 1-0 decision to Utah Valley in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Greenville, N.C.
The Tigers (8-4) were playing in their third-straight NCAA Tournament, fourth in the last five seasons and ninth in program history.
Utah Valley (13-4-4) is unbeaten in its last nine matches.
The Tigers came out firing Wednesday afternoon, with Lisa Pechersky taking four shots in the span of nine minutes with one clanging off the crossbar. Lara Kazandjian saw a try just miss on the final possession of the half, and the teams went into the locker room deadlocked.
Memphis goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg was stout between the pipes in the opening half, making a clutch save on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute.
Memphis had an 8-6 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.
Utah Valley broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute, as Sadie Brockbank raced down the pitch and put it past Moberg off assists from Amber Tripp and Julianna Carter.
After that, the Tigers kept pushing to knot things up. Utah Valley keeper Isabel Jones-Dawe made a pair of saves just before the 70th minute, and the Tigers were just shy on multiple other opportunities before the clock ran out.
Memphis outshot the Wolverines in the match, 15-7. Five of those were on-frame.
The Tigers' 2020 season played this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic also included a perfect 5-0 mark at home and a 3-2 overtime win at No. 6 Vanderbilt on March 28.
