FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Memphis Tigers continued their SEC-packed non-conference schedule with an 14-1 loss to No. 2 Arkansas Tuesday at Baum-Walker Stadium. In their third game against a top four nationally ranked SEC opponent, the Tigers managed just three hits in the loss. Braden Webb led the way for Memphis with two of the team's three hits.
Arkansas (15-3), the nation's No. 1 ranked team last week, jumped on Dalton Kendrick (L, 0-1) with two outs in each of the first two innings. In the home half of the first, Cayden Wallace put the Razorbacks ahead 1-0 with a two-out RBI single. In the second, Christian Franklin drew a two-out bases loaded walk, which made it 2-0 Arkansas, while Charlie Welch followed with a two-run single. Arkansas led 4-0 after two innings.
The Tigers (9-9) struggled to get much going against Caleb Bolden (W, 1-0) in his third start of the season. Bolden kept Memphis off the scoreboard until his final inning, as the Tigers plated their lone run of the night in the fifth frame. Bolden issued a pair of walks with a wild pitch sandwiched in between. The Arkansas starter departed for Ryan Costeiu who Webb greeted with an RBI single. Memphis trailed 4-1 halfway through the matchup.
In relief of Kendrick, James Muse kept the Tigers alive through the middle part of the game. Muse stranded a pair of inherited runners in the fifth inning and nearly got out of a jam in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs in the home half of the seventh, Muse appeared to escape on a groundout by Jacob Nesbit. Initially called the third out of the inning on the field, Arkansas asked for a review and the call was overturned to an RBI single. Muse retired the next man that he faced, as Arkansas left the bases loaded and led 5-1.
The Razorbacks used the long ball to put the game away late. Braydon Webb hit a solo home run in the seventh, while Wallace connected with a two-run blast in the eighth, which made it 8-1. The Razorbacks followed Wallace's home run with a single, a walk, and a batter that reached on catcher's interference. With the bases loaded, Nesbit made it a seven-run inning with a grand slam off of Brayden Green. Arkansas added two more in the eighth and made it 14-1, the eventual final.
In Memphis' final chance of the season against a ranked SEC opponent, the Tigers will try to earn a road split on Wednesday vs. the Razorbacks. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Baum-Walker Stadium. After the quick series in Fayetteville, the Tigers will return home and wrap up non-conference play with a three-game set vs. Murray State March 26-28 at FedExPark.
