Feb 06, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior forward Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu claimed her seventh double-double this season scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in the Tigers' 67-53 loss to ECU. The Tigers are now 4-8 on the season and 2-5 in American Athletic Conference play.
ECU came back from an 11-point deficit to tie the game and went on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter to claim victory over Memphis.
"I thought early in the game we did a great job of getting the ball in the places that we wanted it and we were very aggressive against their pressure," said Memphis head coach Melissa McFerrin. "In the second half ECU was able to gain more confidence while we lost ours."
Memphis battled its way to a 16-13 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and held on to it throughout the next 20 minutes of regulation. In the second quarter, the Tigers extended the scoring margin to seven points, but ECU scored two threes with a little over one minute left on the clock to make it a two-point game at halftime. The Pirates gained momentum early in the fourth quarter and did not let up.
Sophomore guard Aerial Wilson totaled a season-high 10 assists against the Pirates. She is currently second in the AAC and seventh in the nation with her 6.8 assists per game average.
Junior guard Jamirah Shutes made her season-debut after suffering from an injury last season.
"For me, it was tough trying to get in a rhythm and I know that was the same for the team overall especially in the fourth quarter," said Shutes. "We just need to do a better job of taking care of the ball."
Memphis returns to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Feb. 10 to face Cincinnati. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and the game can be seen on ESPN+. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow the Tigers on social media at @MemphisWBB.
