Tigers fall to Cincinnati, 73-62
Feb 10, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior forward Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu claimed her eighth double-double of the season scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Tigers' 73-62 loss to Cincinnati. Alana Davis was the Tigers' second leading scorer with 10 points and 10 rebounds to mark her first double-double this season. The Tigers are now 4-9 on the season and 2-6 in American Athletic Conference play.
Cincinnati opened the fourth quarter with a 12-0 run to claim the lead and ultimately seal the victory after coming back from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter.
Both teams battled it out in the first quarter. With less than one second left on the clock foul trouble allowed the Bearcats to take a 20-19 lead. The Tigers opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 12-point lead. Memphis stayed ahead, but Cincinnati managed to narrow the scoring margin to just six points by halftime.
Memphis totaled just four turnovers compared to Cincinnati's eight in the first half, but things took a turn in the second half when the Tigers racked up an additional 16 turnovers in comparison to Cincinnati's seven.
"I think we got loose with the ball causing us to turn it over more than we should have, and those turnovers turned into points for the other team," said Davis. "We have to figure out how to finish games."
Although the outcome was unfavorable, the Memphis bench is getting stronger as different players are starting to see more minutes.
"Having Jamirah back is huge, having En'dya get minutes is huge, having KeKe come in is huge," said sophomore guard Aerial Wilson. "It changes things, of course, but that's the team we should've been from the beginning."
Memphis travels to Houston for a road contest on Saturday, Feb. 13 to take on the Cougars. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT and the game can be seen on ESPN+. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow the Tigers on social media at @MemphisWBB.
