MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Head coach Katrina Merriweather and crew have had an outstanding start to the season, picking up two wins inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse to open the 2021-22 season. They will pack up for their first road game of the season at Little Rock this Thursday night before playing host to Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers are coming off a dominating 89-58 win over SIUE that saw Emani Jefferson score a career high 20 points and land on the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honor Roll with her performance. Along with Jefferson, senior guard Maya Stovall notched her first double-digit game with 12 points off the bench. Jefferson, Lanetta Williams and Aliyah Green would lead the way for Memphis with seven rebounds each.
The Trojans of Little Rock (2-1) are coming off their second straight win of the season when they notched a 73-63 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday night. Sali Kourouma led all scorers with 24 points while Tia Harvey came off the bench for 12 points. Angelique Francis and Dariel Johnson led the Trojans on the boards combining for 24 of the team's 48 total rebounds.
For the season, Kourouma is leading the offensive charge for Little Rock with 23.0 points per game. She is the only Trojan averaging double figures this season.
The Tigers and Trojans have a long-standing rivalry with one another, facing off against each other 16 times in the past and once a season for the past 11 years.
Last season when Little Rock and Memphis met, Alana Davis had a game-high 20 points on 8-12 shooting from the field while Madison Griggs and Jatyjia Jones added in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
While the Tiger's offense shined, it was the Trojans who came away with the win. Little Rock would hold Memphis to just seven points in the third quarter to take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Tigers would not be able to regain their lead and suffered the 61-52 loss.
Florida A&M (0-1) is back on the court this year after foregoing the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19.
The Rattlers opened the 2021-22 season at Troy University where the Trojan's defense held FAMU to just 50 points in the game while shooting less than 35% from the field.
Anisah Douglas came off the bench for the Rattlers for 13 points while Dylan Horton added in 11 points and four assists.
Memphis will tip-off at Little Rock on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. while the Tigers will be back in Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip-off against Florida A&M. Coverage for both games can be found on ESPN+ (Little Rock, Florida A&M) and on the Memphis Tiger Network.
