Tigers Top No. 10 SMU in Thrilling Fashion

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After No. 10 SMU took a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute, the Memphis Tigers regrouped, tied the game 30 seconds later and ended up securing a hard-fought, 3-2 overtime win over the Mustangs Saturday night in Memphis, Tenn.
The Tigers have won three-straight games and improve to 4-6-1 overall and 3-2-0 in American Athletic Conference action. SMU falls to 6-2-2 and 3-2-0, and Memphis is now tied with the Mustangs for third in the conference.

- In the 27th minute, Toby McCallum fired a rocket off the post that was rebounded into the back of the net by Maxi Galizzi to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
- SMU knotted the game in the 37th minute, when Tobin Shanks headed in a goal at the front of the net.
- The tightly-contested game remained tied at 1 until the 87th minute, when SMU's Bailey Sparks broke the deadlock.
- The Tigers responded in fine fashion, scoring the equalizer 30 seconds later off the foot of Galizzi.
- With less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, SMU was whistled for a penalty and Memphis' Artur De Luca converted the kick to finish the contest.
- Memphis outshot SMU, 15-11.
- Galizzi notched his second two-goal game of the season (Sept. 14 at Central Arkansas), and he now has nine points in the last three matches (three goals, three assists).
- De Luca, the reigning AAC Defensive Player of the Week, has scored three times in the last two outings.
- Memphis also recently topped the Mustangs when they were in the top-10, winning 4-3 over No. 3 SMU on Oct. 18, 2019.
