Tigers Take Winning Form to Tampa
Oct 14, 2021 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Now tied for third in the American Athletic Conference standings, the Memphis Tigers go for their fourth-straight win Friday at 6 p.m. CT at South Florida.
Friday's match will be broadcast on ESPN+, and live stats are also available.
Memphis (4-6-1, 3-2-0 AAC) is coming off a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over No. 10 SMU in its last outing, which came on the heels of wins at Temple and UCF the week prior. The Tigers now sit tied for third in the conference standings, one game behind 4-1-0 league leaders Tulsa and UCF.
"We are pleased where we at lately, but we can't settle for it," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "We know what USF brings, and I believe they are better than what their record shows. These games get harder and harder as the season goes on. Our confidence is building, and we are focusing on the next game and what's at stake."
Memphis' Maxi Galizzi is the AAC's reigning Offensive Player of the Week, and Artur De Luca is coming off his second consecutive league Defensive Player of the Week nod. Galizzi scored twice in the SMU match, once in the 27th minute and once in the final minutes of the contest to tie the game at 2. It was his second two-goal game of the season (Sept. 14 at Central Arkansas), and he now has nine points in the last three matches (three goals, three assists).
De Luca played all 99 minutes in the match against the Mustangs, and he converted the game winner on a penalty kick to give the Tigers the victory.
South Florida (3-6-1, 1-4-0 AAC) defeated Temple in its last match, 3-0, which snapped a four-match losing streak that included three losses against top-10 opponents.
After Friday, Memphis stays on the road to play Tulsa next Friday at 7 p.m. The Tigers' next home game is Wednesday, Oct. 27 against Temple at 7 p.m.
