Tigers fall 7-0 to #12 Georgia Tech in first dual match of season

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Memphis women's tennis joined Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Georgia Tech in the Bulldog Kickoff this weekend to open the 2021 season.

"Great weekend for the Tigers. We came, we competed hard and definitely got better," said Memphis head coach Hayden Perez. "I'm looking forward to watching this group grow. Every match is a learning experience and it's fun to watch."

On the first day of competition, the Tigers saw action against Mississippi State in both doubles and singles. Freshmen Sophie Abrams, Camila Soares and Dolavee Tumthong all made their career debuts.

On the second day of competition the Tigers got off to an early start as Abrams paired with senior Josephine Cao to defeat Ole Miss duo Lillian Gabrielsen and Elysia Pool with a 6-3 set on court two.

Later that afternoon, sophomore Aran Teixido Garcia went on to secure a singles win against Ole Miss' Lillian Gabrielsen with a 6-4, 6-2 decision on court three.

The weekend concluded in the Tigers' 7-0 loss in a dual with #12 Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets had a strong showing with four nationally ranked players competing, but Memphis came determined to give its best.

Experience proved to be an asset as seniors Katherine Cao and Alisha Reayer defeated Georgia Tech's Gia Cohen and Carol Lee in a 7-5 win.

"Georgia Tech was too good for us today, they played well," said Perez. "I'm proud of the way the girls competed and even in the loss, we got better today!"
