MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Prepping for its 26th season of competition this spring, Memphis women's soccer began its preseason training camp earlier this week.
The Tigers, who claimed the 2019 American Athletic Conference regular-season title, opened training with an annual conditioning test on Tuesday morning followed by an evening session featuring an 11v11 scrimmage.
After the fall season was postponed, the Tigers shifted its focus to spring 2021 with a start date of February 4. Head Coach Brooks Monaghan, who is entering his 21st season at the helm, said seeing his team's transition from a postponed fall season to a winter preseason training camp has been smooth.
"The No. 1 thing is it's great to get back out here. Obviously, it's different. Having done this over 20 years, you're used to sun burns and sweating during preseason training, so it's different conditions," Monaghan said. "The kids have put in the work over the break and came back ready to go. On the field, it's going to be little rusty, but overall, we've seen some really good things."
Memphis graduated four seniors from its championship team in 2019 but return a majority of production on both sides of the ball. The Tigers bring back 90 percent of their goals scored, including nine different goal scorers from fall 2019. Clarissa Larisey, who garnered the league's Offensive Player of the Year as a junior, brings back 16 goals and four assists.
Four seniors prep for their fourth preseason camp in Blue and Gray. Forwards Larisey, Samantha Murphy and Lisa Pechersky each provided offensive production, combining for 24 goals, 13 assists and 61 points in 8,890 minutes and 57 starts. In goal, Elizabeth Moberg started 20 matches for Memphis during a record-breaking season. The Port Saint Lucie, Florida native registered 16 wins and 12 shutouts behind a 0.53 goals-against average on her way to AAC Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
The Tigers also welcome 14 freshmen to the roster in 2020, including January enrollees Jasmine Guerber and Momo Nakao. To balance the youth, Memphis returns 13 players who logged minutes last year.
"I believe we have a lot of pieces to work with," Monaghan added. "If you're looking back to 2019, we had a good year and were talented. We've learned we're going to be deeper this year than we were in years past. We've added a couple new players (this semester) who can play at this level. It's been a very good first week."
