Tigers claim conference honor for second consecutive season
IRVING, Texas – A day after earning the Commissioner's Postgraduate Leadership Award, Memphis women's soccer alumna Stasia Mallin added another accolade to her résumé in being named the American Athletic Conference's Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
Chosen by the AAC's faculty athletics representatives, Wednesday's announcement marks the second-straight year Memphis women's soccer has touted the accolade after Elizabeth Woerner was named conference's Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season.
Mallin will receive a $2,000 scholarship from the league office, which can be applied to graduate or professional studies in addition to a $5,000 scholarship attached to her Commissioner's Postgraduate Leadership Award announced Tuesday. Memphis rifle's Levi Clark was also recognized as the AAC's At-Large Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
"I can't be prouder of Stasia in getting this recognition for her tremendous accomplishments. From what she's done throughout her collegiate career on the pitch to what's she's achieved in the classroom, it's so well-deserved," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "She's been such influential piece not only to our team but to her fellow classmates and in the Memphis community during her last four years here. She fully encompasses what a true student-athlete is."
A semifinalist for the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy, Mallin's final season in Blue and Gray yielded United Soccer Coaches first team All-America honors and first team All-Conference accolades after a record-breaking senior campaign.
The American's all-time assist leader capped her collegiate career with four goals and 29 assists. She also anchored a defensive line that pitched 12 shutouts in 2019, helping the Tigers to the regular-season conference title.
After being named second team Academic All-America by CoSIDA in 2018, Mallin earned two first team honors in 2019 as voted by CoSIDA and United Soccer Coaches. The Carmel, Indiana native earned a 3.981 GPA with a degree in biomedical engineering, graduating summa cum laude.
"Being able to play soccer at the highest possible level while also pursuing a degree was the most rewarding experience I've ever had," Mallin said of her time at the UofM. "It wasn't always easy, but the lessons I learned on how to be a better teammate and leader will help me for years down the road in my future career."
Named a 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year candidate earlier this month, she was a member of the Alpha Eta Mu Beta national biomedical engineering honors society, the Tau Beta Pi engineering honors society and the Alpha Epsilon Delta health professional honors society. She was also Memphis' recipient of the Elma Roane Award in 2020, honoring a female student-athlete with drive, enthusiasm and determination while maintaining a concern for others.
In the community, she served as an undergraduate research assistant in Memphis' biomedical engineering department, volunteered at Target House/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and at FedEx House/Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
Mallin plans to enroll in medical school and pursue a career in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine or sports psychiatry.
