Tiger senior adds second national academic honor of career
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the second consecutive year, Memphis baseball senior Alec Trela was named an Academic All-American.
The third baseman garnered First Team Academic All-America honors, as voted by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday.
Last year, Trela was voted to the third team in addition to earning All-District accolades in 2019 and 2020. In joining Tucker Tubbs (2015) and Chad Zurcher (2011) as Memphis alumnus Academic All-American honorees last year, Trela is now the first Tiger in program history to earn multiple Academic All-America nods.
"A very well-deserved and tremendous honor for Alec. He is a true example of a student-athlete and wonderful teammate, and he balances baseball and his pursuit of a tremendous degree very well," head coach Daron Schoenrock said of the senior. "It has been a joy to see Alec execute his academic and athletic plan over the past four years."
The Bloomington, Ill., native holds a 3.97 GPA as a biomedical engineering major. Trela, a UofM Dean's List member, has also been named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic team in his previous three years at Memphis.
On the diamond, Trela was named to the 2020 Preseason All-Conference Team. He started all 17 games for the Tigers in the shortened season, while having also started all 186 games Memphis has played in the last four years.
In 2020, Trela led the Tigers with five doubles and 12 walks drawn. He also ranked fourth on the squad with eight runs batted in. Last year, Trela ranked second in home runs (6) and doubles (15) and third in RBI (32).
Trela was one of seven first-team honorees who posted a 3.95 GPA or higher. The senior was also one of six repeat selections named to an Academic All-America team in 2020.
Additionally, The American had the most honorees on the first team list as AAC representatives Grant Mathews (Tulane) and Alec Burleson (ECU) also joined Trela on the first team ballot.
