Women's basketball signs Jatyjia 'Tye' Jones Thursday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team and head coach Melissa McFerrin announce the addition of junior college transfer Jatyjia 'Tye' Jones from Jones College Wednesday afternoon. Jones joins a trio of freshmen in Coriah Beck, Endya Buford and Callie Wright that signed during the early period last November.

"Jatyjia is a dynamic athlete who will give us size and versatility on the wing," said McFerrin. "She has a high motor, is a talented rebounder and is explosive getting to the rim. She is a fierce competitor who will brings toughness, great leadership qualities and winning culture to our team. We are excited to welcome Tye to the Tiger family."

Jones comes to the University of Memphis from Jones College where the Bobcats earned the No. 8 seed in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus. As a sophomore, Jones helped guide the Bobcats to a 24-4 overall record and the team's fourth-straight NJCAA Region 23 Championship. She earned her team's Bobcat Award for the best all-around student-athlete.

In 2019-20, Jones averaged just shy of 10 points per game with 6.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists. She appeared in 59 games at Jones and recorded 17 double digit performances and four double-doubles. Prior to the season ending abruptly, Jones posted back-to-back 20-plus point performances including a career-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting against LSU Eunice with nine rebounds.

On Jan. 7, 2020, Jones was named the MACJC Player of the Week after averaging 16 points, 5.5 rebounds with five assists and two steals against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents.

At Jones College, she was a member of the President's List for having a 4.0 grade-point average one semester and the Dean's List for having a 3.5 GPA

After beginning her high school career at Pontotoc High School, Jones attended Ingomar High School as a senior and led the Falcons to a 37-1 overall record and a 2017-18 State Championship. She was named the Division 2A Player of the Year.

In addition to her player of the year nod, she was named a Mississippi/Alabama All-Star, All-Division, All-Union County, Clarion Ledger All-State, Daily Journal All-Area and a MEMBCA All-Star. At Pontotoc, she was invited to the North vs. South All-Star Game.

Prior to the addition of Jones, the 2020 class is ranked 31st-nationally per the All-Star Girls Report and first in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers have had back-to-back top 35 recruiting classes with the addition of the 2020 class.
