Tigers finish Mardi Gras Classic with loss to Jacksonville

Memphis opens the home schedule next weekend in the Blues City Classic
MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Memphis softball team concluded the Mardi Gras Classic Sunday afternoon with a 8-2 loss to Jacksonville. Memphis drops to 7-8 on the year and 2-3 in Mobile with 15 home games in-a-row coming up on the Tigers' schedule.

Memphis avoided Jacksonville runs in the bottom of the first inning with a bases loaded 1-2-3 double play. The Tigers put two base runners on in the second with a pair of drawn walks by Brady Rowland and Sara Ann Davidson, but a strikeout to end the inning slashed Memphis' chance at bringing the two runners home.

Jacksonville capitalized in the bottom half of the second, scoring a pair of unearned runs.

The Tigers scored the first of their two runs in the game in the top of the third as Gracie Morton doubled down the right field line. Alyssa Dean scored on the play after reaching base on a throwing error by the Jacksonville pitcher.

Trailing 3-1, Memphis came within one with as a run scored in the top of the third inning. Sam Ibison singled up the middle, scoring Dean who doubled down the left field line with one out earlier in the inning.

Jacksonville again responded, but this time it was with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth and one more in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers put a base runner on in the top of the seventh, but she was stranded at first in a comeback attempt.

Chyanne Ellett was handed the loss after throwing 1.2 innings for the Tigers. Morton and Ibison led Memphis with two hits each and Dean scored both of Memphis' runs.
